At Last . . . Our China Belle

Belle is doing great.  She didn't cry much.  As soon as she started Daddy handed her a rice cracker and she stopped.  She is pretty stoic only smiling a couple of times.  We just keep singing to her and loving on her, sooner or later she will understand how much we love her.  Serenity is over the moon and totally smitten with her meimei!

Let’s see where did I leave off....Oh yes, the United Lounge in San Francisco.....

As nice as that was we were on a mission.  We needed to get to our baby waiting for us in China.  We happily boarded our plane for a 12 hour flight to Beijing.  We were glad we sprung for Economy Plus for such a long trip.  The flight itself was pretty uneventful.  We dozed on and off.  Watched a few movies, most notably The Croods, ate a few times and it was touchdown in China.

Coming back to China is always a very emotional experience for me.  I am so proud of my America and all it stands for, but China is such an old civilization.  And political differences aside, it is a beautiful land.  Oh sure, you can pick apart anything, but look deeper and see what is really there.  See the people, listen to the cadence of everyday life, watch mom and grandma walking with the son or daughter and it is a beautiful picture.  It could be happening anywhere, even in our hometown.  But it isn’t happening in my homeland, it is Serenity’s homeland and that makes it all the more special.  

I’m watching my daughter closely.  I’m looking for clues of how this experience is affecting her.  Little Miss is handling it the way she handles everything, with joy and exuberance.  She loves China, everything about China!  Well, almost everything...on today's tour we faced the Westernized woman's greatest adversary.....The Squatty Potty!  My little Princess would have none of that!  When confronted, she declared she would hold it! And she did so in a manner that left no waiving in her decision. (Poppy you may be amused to know she announced preference for the outhouse at camp)  I,  being made of weaker fiber, availed myself of the opportunity to ‘experience China’.

We had a busy day.  Breakfast at the hotel buffet with it’s wide assortment of offerings, both Western and Chinese, and then a bus ride to ‘Old’ Beijing.  We boarded rickshaws and toured the hutongs.  The hutongs are old style neighborhoods.....just google it, It’s hard to describe. Anyway we went to visit Mrs Wu, a 70 something resident of the hutong.  She told us something about her life in the hutong.  It was humbling and lovely as she served us tea and snacks while she talked about her semi-arranged marriage and raising her 3 children there.  She told us that 6 families share the same courtyard AND communal bathroom.  Before that I was buying the romanticism of ‘Old Beijing’ and the community spirit it offered.  I was even willing to arrange marriages for my kids, but she lost me at community bathroom. At the end Serenity spoke to her in the little Mandarin she knows.  And when we left Little Miss declared she WILL learn Mandarin!  Mrs Wu said that is the one thing she would like the children that leave China to take with them, their native language.  UMMMM, 

My Bad.  I haven’t tried hard enough.  Note to self: find teacher! So we left the hutong and boarded our rickshaws back to our bus.  

From the hutongs to the silk factory, and like every factory tour you have ever been on it was very interesting.  After the tour we did some shopping and looking around.  We didn’t buy anything there.  Oh don’t worry, we will stimulate the local economy plenty when the time is right.  Once back on the bus George, our guide, took us to a Chinese restaurant for lunch.  It was there Serenity encountered the aforementioned bathroom.  Serenity was severely grossed out and George said he would take us to a better one.  LOL We need to work on George’s definition of better.  ‘Nuff said.

Tiannemen Square and the Forbidden City were awe-inspiring beyond what pictures can convey.  We were walking on stones laid years before Columbus sailed the ocean blue.  

Back to the hotel for a cooling respite and a swim.  Serenity made friends with the other little girl in our group that was also born in China and a similiar age.  They swam and played while I chatted with her mom and another mom.  I think that is my favorite part of an adoption trip, connecting with like minded folks on the same journey.  

After the pool we went to the conceirge lounge, but it wasn’t anything we were interested in so we went down stairs to the main lobby and just sat around and chatted some more. Then back to the room for something light to eat.  I was asleep by 9 which may explain why I was up at 2:30 and have not been able to go back to sleep.  Jet lag is kicking my butt!

And today we go to the Great Wall (pray for me!) and Jade factory, look out local economy you may be getting stimulated!

Greetings from the Golden State.
Our morning began bright and.....well, no.....actually it was dark and early.  We got up at 3 am.  Back in the day we were just getting in at 3.  But the times have changed and we are responsible adults now.  Hey, you, quit laughing.  Ok, ok, Matt is a responsible adult.  I wanted to stay up all night and sleep on the plane.  But wiser heads prevailed and we all made use of the melationin I packed and fell right to sleep.
Our plane was wheels up at 5:45 right on schedule.  Our seats had individual tv screens that we ponied up the $6 a piece to watch.  Serenity and I watched Oz the Great and Powerful. And I watched Jack, the Giant Slayer and started watching Dual Survival.  The flight took 5 hours.
We had United Club passes through our credit card.  We are now comfortable ensconced in the club.  They have a continental breakfast laid out as well as juice, coffees, cappucino, lattes, teas.... you get the idea.
Our flight will be leaving here at noon San Fran time or 3 home time.  Tonight while you are snoozing in your bed, we will be landing in Beijing.  3:15 am at home,  3:15 pm in China.

Itinerary and Prayer Requests

July 24-25, 2013—We leave at 5:45 am on Wednesday from Pittsburgh, fly to San Francisco, and finally Beijing, landing at 3:15 am on July 25 (This will be 3:15 PM in Beijing!).
Please pray for God’s protection for us during all flights and airport stops, especially for Serenity who will be returning to her birth country! While this is exciting, she will see her adoption anew through her new sister.  We ask prayer for our attitudes during these LONG days of travel. Pray for us to stay healthy during the trip to be able to care for our girls.

Since China is 12 Hours ahead, we would love it if you would pray for the things below on the day before or at your bedtime the night before!

July 26, 2013—We will tour Beijing with other families adopting.
Pray for our bodies as we adjust to the time difference (12 hours ahead!)  and environment.  Pray for us as we get to know the other families.  We will be spending the next two weeks with them, so we pray we will forge God-given, life-long friendships. We remain close to Serenity's travel group, we would like Belle to have the same opportunity.

July 27, 2013—We will climb the Great Wall and hopefully rest!
Please pray for us that we will get good rest tonight, because we have another travel day tomorrow.  

July 28, 2013—We are flying to Belle's province (state).  Our flight is actually on your July 27, 10:15-11:40 pm.
Please pray for a safe plane trip.  ESPECIALLY, pray for Belle.  We receive her tomorrow and she has no idea her world is about to be turned upside down.  This is the last night she will spend in the orphanage!  Pray for her to have peace and no fear.

July 29, 2013—Gotcha Day!  An orphanage worker will bring Belle to us at an office.
Please pray that Belle will feel safe with us and that our Lord will give her peace.  Pray that we will do the best things with her to help her know we are her Mama and Dada.

July 30, 2013—Our adoption is made official in China!  Our day will be filled with paperwork!
Please pray for us and Belle as we travel the city doing paperwork.  Pray that she will eat and drink for us. Serenity refused to eat any solid food when we first received her.  She would only take a bottle.

July 31, 2013—a free day!  We may get to travel to Belle’s orphanage and finding spot on this day.
Pray that we will be allowed to travel to her orphanage.  We want to thank her nannies for the care they have given her and give her a sense of closure.  Pray that she will not be scared and will be ready to leave with us. Pray for the nannies, also.  These women have cared for and loved Belle when we could not.  Their work is so important, as important as any work can be, pray they have peace letting these kids go. 

August 1, 2013— We receive completed paperwork on this day.
  Pray that all our paperwork is correct and will not cause delays.  Pray for Belle as she may be grieving for all she has lost (she doesn’t know what is happening). Pray for us to be able to comfort her as she grieves.  Pray for Serenity's heart during this time.

August 2, 2013—We receive Belle’s passport so she can come to the USA!  Free time.
Pray that her passport arrives with no trouble.  We are more than halfway done with our trip.  Pray for our attitudes as we are likely very tired and homesick! 

August 3, 2013—Another travel day!  We fly to the city with the US Consulate (12:50-3:05 am your time). 
This will be Belle’s first time on a plane!  Pray that she will be content and healthy. 

August 4, 2013—more paperwork!  We may be able to go to a Christian church on this day!
Pray that we can go to church or minister to one another on our Lord’s Day!  Pray that we will feel the Lord’s Spirit.

August 5, 2013—Belle will have a physical and have her visa picture made.  This will be a long, noisy time as lots of children will be having physicals.  We are not allowed to accompany her the whole time : (
Pray that Belle's hgb is high enough to travel without another transfusion in China.  Pray that we will all handle the long, hot day well.  Pray for her as she will be separated from us for a while for the first time.

August 6, 2013—US Consulate appointment.  We will take an oath and have an interview with the US government. 
Pray that everything goes smoothly and that Belle is issued her visa with no problem.

August 7, 2013—We receive Belle’s visa and being travel HOME!  Praise the Lord!  We leave at 10:30pm   from Guangzhou and spend the night in Hong Kong.

August 8, 2013— We leave Hong Kong at 11:30 AM and after a few plan changes arrive in Pittsburgh at 9:30 pm!
Pray that we get her visa in plenty of time to make our flights! Pray for the Lord to put a hedge of protection around us and get us home.  Pray that Belle will sleep and eat on the plane.

WELCOME HOME BELLE!

It is amazing to see the girls re connect.  I'm not sure that is the right word because they walked into the rooms and acted like one of them had just gone to the kitchen and came back.  It seemed like a natural connection that had never been broken by mere distance.  But enough of my ponderings....

We started out on Sunday, in the rain.  Lovely.  And it rained, and it rained, and it rained.  It rained really hard at times.

By lunch we had sun peaking out.  We stopped for lunch in Walterboro, SC at a place called  Duke's BBQ.  And it was GOOD! It was 'Take Grandma after church' good.  

Between the rain showers we finally made it to Edisto.  

Our house wasn't ready yet and our friends either weren't there yet or weren't home so, of course, we headed to the beach. When our house was ready, we got there and unloaded.  Then discovered there was no a/c in our house.  We called and got a new house.  Poor Matt had just carried the last of our luggage up the stairs in the first house.  So he turned around and lugged it back down the stairs.  

We reconnected with our friends and had dinner together.  We decided we would go to the beach together the next morning.

The girls had reserved times for pottery painting.  Serenity had to consult with Katie about what to wear.  She decided Justice Sparkles may be just a 'bit' overdressed,

Crafts By the Sea 

Dinner that evening was at Whaley's  It was really good too.  It was a neat seafood joint.  Kelly and I went to town on the oysters.  They were some of the best ever.

After dinner we all came back to our house and just visited.  The evening ended with 'Uncle' Jason watching cute kitty videos with the kids.
